Wendy Cox, Pharm.D., is the new associate dean for curricular and student affairs at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, moving from her role as assistant dean for professional education effective January 1. Cox is also a clinical associate professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education.
Cox’s new responsibilities include managing curricular issues, including the re-engineered Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, and she will continue to oversee the Office of Student Affairs. She also serves as chair of the curricular transformation steering committee.
Pam Joyner, Ed.D., M.S. Pharm., executive associate dean of professional education, said the new position is necessary because of her expanded responsibilities and changes in the School’s curriculum.
“We are in the process of implementing the new curriculum for the first-year class and continuing to develop years two through four,” Joyner said. “Having Wendy focus on curricular issues and serve as chair of the curricular transformation steering committee will enable the School to move forward more quickly.”
She said because of Cox’s continuous commitment to the School’s success, she is confident Cox will thrive in the new position.
“Under her leadership, the Office of Student Affairs has been transformed to an office that serves both professional and graduate students. The new model has improved efficiencies and allowed more student programming and mentoring opportunities. The new model has also gained national attention,” Joyner said.
Cox received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and a primary care specialty residency affiliated with Campbell University at Kaiser Permanente in Cary and the Southern Regional Area Health Education Center in Fayetteville.
She worked as an AHEC faculty member until 2005, serving first as the coordinator of pharmacy education at the Northwest AHEC and then as the director of pharmacotherapy services at the Wake AHEC with a clinical practice in ambulatory care. She joined the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2005 as the director of student services. In 2010 she was named the assistant dean for professional education, a role in which she oversees the Office of Student Affairs.
“Since starting with the school, Wendy has devoted a significant amount of time to overseeing and continuously improving the Doctor of Pharmacy admissions process,” Joyner said. “The admissions office, housed in the Office of Student Affairs, processes and determines the admission status of over 650 applicants per year. Wendy led efforts to reengineer the admissions process and implemented a new admissions model that focuses on noncognitive attributes, in addition to academic ability.”
