Tom Angelo, Ed.D., will serve as director of educator development in the Academy focusing on developing hands-on workshops and other resources to support the School’s reengineered Pharm.D. curriculum

Thomas Angelo, Ed.D., has been appointed as a clinical professor of educational innovation and research in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and director of educator development in the Academy.

In this dual appointment, Angelo will develop hands-on workshops and other resources to support the School’s reengineered Pharm.D. curriculum, as well as coteaching some courses. He will also collaborate on educational research and assessment projects and mentor junior faculty, fellows and graduate students.

“The hiring of Dr. Angelo serves as a prominent symbol of the School’s commitment to the pursuit of excellence and innovation in student learning,” said Scott Singleton, Ph.D., executive director of the Academy. “We’re excited to have his help in leading essential activities within the School’s Educational Renaissance initiative.”

Over the past 30 years, Angelo has served as faculty member, faculty developer and academic administrator in the United States, New Zealand and Australia. He has taught statistics, research methods and higher education courses at institutions that include Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley, Boston College, the University of Miami, Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and La Trobe University in Australia. He has directed six university educational development centers — four of which he founded — and twice served as an associate provost. He has also consulted on teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum design for more than 250 educational institutions and 65 associations and organizations. Angelo has delivered more than 90 higher education conference keynote addresses.

“Dr. Angelo is an internationally recognized expert and consultant on higher education teaching and learning, assessment and faculty development,” says Denise Rhoney, Pharm.D., PACE chair and Ron and Nancy McFarlane Distinguished Professor. “Using his unparalleled knowledge of learning and assessment, he will help us identify gaps in our curriculum plan and help develop ways to fill them.”

Angelo has authored or coauthored five books and more than 35 articles and chapters. His most successful publication, Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers, Second Edition, coauthored with K. Patricia Cross, has more than 100,000 copies in print.

Angelo earned a Bachelor of Arts in government with honors in 1975 and a Master of Arts in political science in 1977, both from California State University, Sacramento. He received a Master of Education in applied linguistics from Boston University in 1981 and a doctorate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education in 1987.
