Peter Koval, PharmD has received this year’s Teaching Award from the 2015 graduating class of the Cone Health Family Medicine Physician Residency Program at Cone Health in Greensboro, N.C.

Koval is an associate professor of clinical education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the director of pharmacotherapy at the Greensboro Area Health Education Center. His clinical pharmacy position is in collaboration with the Greensboro AHEC and the Cone Health Family Medicine Center.

This award is given annually to family medicine faculty for their contribution to the overall education of the graduating class. Koval is the first non-physician to earn this award.

“Peter Koval is a dynamic faculty member and educator,” says Jane Nester, DrPH, executive director of the Greensboro AHEC. “We are blessed to have him here with us at Cone Health and Greensboro AHEC.”

Koval also won the School’s 2015 Experiential Faculty Instructor of the Year award and 2011 AHEC Instructor of the Year award.

“Pete has a natural gift at teaching and mentoring and our students are the true beneficiaries,” says Robert Blouin, PharmD, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. “Beyond those accolades, he is also a great academic citizen and team player. We greatly value the many contributions he makes to our school.”

Koval received his Doctor of Pharmacy from Campbell University in 1994. He completed a pharmacy practice residency at Cone Health System in Greensboro, N.C., and then went on to complete a second year of primary-care residency in St. Louis, Mo., in 1996.

Koval has been board certified in pharmacotherapy since 1998 and has been a practicing clinical pharmacist since 2006.
