Doris Peter, PhD

Doris Peter, PhD, is manager of the Consumer Reports Ratings Center of the Consumers Union. She currently serves as the principal investigator for Consumers Union’s grant under the Consumer and Prescriber Education Grant Project (Consumer Reports Health Best Buy Drugs). This project involves translating and disseminating comparative-effectiveness research into actionable advice for consumers. Dr. Peter has also led projects that translate information about the safety, effectiveness, and strength of evidence behind treatments for more than 180 conditions. Dr. Peter is a neurobiologist by training, earning her PhD at UCLA and completing a postdoctoral fellowship in cellular biophysics at Rockefeller University. Prior to joining the Consumers Union, she spent 10 years in medical publishing, first as an editor and later publisher at The Medical Letter, and then as the North American editor for an international evidence-based medicine journal.
