UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Herb Patterson, Pharm.D., is the recipient of UNC Health’s 2021 Fred M. Eckel Pharmacy Leadership Award.
The award is presented annually in recognition of an individual associated with the UNC Hospitals and Clinics post-graduate pharmacy training programs who has demonstrated sustained professional contributions to pharmacy practice throughout his or her career.
“To win any award from the UNC Department of Pharmacy is an honor and particularly one named after one of my mentors, Fred Eckel. When I saw the list of previous winners it is very humbling to now be a part of that group,” Patterson said.
The University of North Carolina Medical Center’s Pharmacy Residency Programs was founded in 1967 by Fred M. Eckel, RPh, and over 50 years later, continues to offer advanced training opportunities for residents that are nationally and internationally renowned.
As a tribute to the impact and contributions Eckel had in establishing residency programs, and to the leadership of the pharmacy profession, The Fred M. Eckel Pharmacy Leadership Award was established in 2011. To date, 10 awards have been presented.
“We are thrilled to present the award to Dr. Patterson this year not only for his outstanding contributions and leadership within our profession, but also for the impact that he has had on our residency program. Many of our residents have had the opportunity to work with him in different capacities over the years, and we are appreciative of the mentorship he has provided to them.”
Patterson joined the UNC faculty in 1981. He holds a joint appointment at the School of Pharmacy in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, and at UNC’s School of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology.
Throughout his career at Chapel Hill, Patterson’s research, teaching and clinical activities have been dedicated to optimizing the pharmacotherapy of patients with heart failure. He has served as an investigator on more than 100 heart failure clinical trials and has authored or co-authored over 120 publications. In his time at UNC, he has trained more than 20 fellows and graduate students.
In addition to his research accomplishments and collaborations, Patterson is a Fellow in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, a member of the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Failure Society of America. He was the first pharmacist to be appointed to the Heart Failure Society of America Board of Directors and was the first pharmacist to be designated as a Fellow in the Heart Failure Society of America.
