The UNC School of Pharmacy now ranks eighth among the nation’s pharmacy schools in grants and contracts awarded by the National Institutes of Health, according to numbers compiled by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
School researchers were awarded more than $8.2 million in research funding from the NIH in 2006, up from $5.8 million last year. The School ranked fourteenth in NIH funding in 2005 and seventeenth in 2004.
“The success we have had in attracting greater NIH support over the past few years reflects how serious we are about building the School’s research enterprise,” Dean Bob Blouin said. “The School already has one of the best professional education programs in the country, and we are elevating our research program to match it. Our students, the University, and the people of North Carolina deserve no less.”
Since 2002, the School’s alumni have established six $1 million endowed professorships and contributed greatly to the building of Kerr Hall (opened in 2002) and the renovation of Beard Hall (to be completed this year). This has given the School the space and the funds to hire eight new research-oriented faculty members since 2005. An additional 70,000 square feet of lab space is currently under construction.
