Overview


This course consists of a two-week hands-on experience.  The course will include lectures, demonstrations and hands-on laboratory exercises.  Some parts of the course will be group projects.  These projects will be worked during afternoon and evening sessions.

Tentative Schedule of Events

Day 1

Lecture: General Principles of animal handling, principles of small-animal surgery

Laboratory: Animal facility tours; procedures for handling rats and mice

Day 2-3

Lecture: Whole-animal models of drug disposition (rat and mouse)

Laboratory: Methods of anesthesia; determination of anesthetic depth; euthanasia; blood/tissue collection, gavage administration; tail vein injection; 

Day 4

Lecture: Pharmacologic data analysis

Laboratory: Large animal disection (pig)

Day 5

Lecture: Pharmacokinetic study design

Laboratory: Medium animal handling (dogs and rabbits)

Day 6

Laboratory: Advanced surgery techniques: jugular vein cannulation, urine/feces collection, minipumps

Whole-body autoradiography; isolated perfused liver; isolated perfused kidney; microdialysis; in situ intestinal loop; in situ perfused brain

Day 8-10

Lecture: Methods to study organ pharmacology, primate modles

Laboratory:Perfused kidney, microdialysis, mouse liver perfusion, rat liver perfusion, brain perfusion, intestine perfusion

Day 11

Lecture: Presentation of Porjects

Laboratory: Large animal handling (horse)
