Dean Bob Blouin presents Jennifer Fox with the 2015 Phyllis Smith Staff Award for Excellence during a ceremony at the Carolina Inn December 18.

Jennifer Fox is the recipient of the 2015 Phyllis Smith Staff Award for Excellence given by the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. As the executive assistant in the Office of Professional Education, she supports the work of Pam Joyner, Ed.D., M.S., executive associate dean for professional education; Wendy Cox, Pharm.D., associate dean for curricular and student affairs; and Phil Rodgers, Pharm.D., assistant dean of pharmacy practice partnerships.

The award recognizes a staff member who is committed to the School’s pursuit of excellence through its business practices. The winner must demonstrate leadership, be an effective team member, have a positive attitude and be enthusiastic.

“My time at the School has been absolutely amazing. I had never worked in an environment where everyone, including staff, students and faculty, is truly invested in the goals and mission of the institution until working here,” Fox said. “I am extremely honored and surprised to have received this award. I find it rewarding to be a part of such a great team, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to the School.”

After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2011, with a double major in English and political science, Fox started working as an immigration paralegal at a law firm in Raleigh. She then started at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy as an executive assistant in January 2013.

“Since Jennifer was hired at the School, it has been incredibly apparent that she was a person with a strong work ethic and an enthusiasm to jump in and help whenever necessary,” Rodgers said. “She took on an array of duties, from scheduling and travel arrangements to coordinating meetings and detailing their minutes to project coordination. She was consistently reliable and dependable.”

The $500 award honors the career of Phyllis Smith, the School’s former director of facilities, who retired in 2014 after more than 30 years of service. Rodgers said Fox’s work ethic and dedication to the School caused her to stand out as an excellent staff member.

“Jennifer brings a positive attitude whenever she is involved. She’s never too busy or impeded to help with your concern,” he said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Jennifer and truly appreciate her as an asset to the team in the dean’s office.  The flow of business within the school has truly been enhanced by Jennifer’s dedication and quality of work.”

Fox said it’s an honor to be recognized among such an excellent team of people.

“I am surrounded by individuals that go above and beyond every day and have learned so much from my coworkers in the three years I have been here. As I think of all of the great people I work with, I am humbled to have received this award,” she said.
