Appropriate Use of Temporary Grades
(adapted in part from the Carolina Undergraduate Bulletin)
AB: This grade should be used for any student who did not take the final exam, but who, by taking the final exam, could pass the course. This AB grade converts to an F* unless the student arranges to take the final exam before the close of the next scheduled semester (fall or spring) after receiving the grade.
In addition to reporting this grade, a Temporary Grade Assignment form (supplied by Registrar’s Office) must also be completed by the instructor. The purpose of this form is to establish a record of what arrangements, if any, have been made between student and instructor to clear the AB.
FA: This grade should be used for any student who did not take the final exam, but could not pass the course, regardless of their performance on the final exam.
IN: This grade should be used for a student that took the final exam in a course, but did not complete some other course requirement, and who by virtue of completing the missing work, might pass the course. This IN grade converts to an F* if not removed within eight weeks of the beginning of the regularly scheduled semester (fall or spring) following its assignment.
In addition to reporting this grade, a Temporary Grade Assignment Form (supplied by Registrar’s Office) must also be completed by the instructor. The purpose of this form is to establish a record of what arrangements, if any, have been made between student and instructor to clear the IN.
NG: This grade should be used for a student in which an honor-code violation investigation is in progress.
NOTE: When assigning temporary grades of AB or IN, the Temporary Grade Assignment Form must be completed by the instructor. This form establishes a plan for how the student is to complete the missing work. This is imperative to assuring that all involved (including the Scholastic Achievement and Progression Committee) have a clear understanding of the situation and what is required of the student, as well as a means of tracking the student’s progress.
