UNC Program on Health Outcomes (PHO)

Under the direction of Morris Weinberger, PhD, this program aims to bring together scientists from the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and other academic units within the University. One objective of the PHO is to conduct outcome studies related to diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, as well as studies related to personal health service delivery and population-based health education and behavioral interventions. In addition to its pedagogical aims, the program will offer a means of communication between researchers and clinicians who need to put the results of their outcomes research into practice.

The UNC Graduate Certificate Program on Health Outcomes

This certificate program in Health Outcomes and Quality of Care requires 9 hours. The Certificate is available to all graduate and professional students, pending their acceptance into the certificate program, who wish to demonstrate academic training in health outcomes and quality of care. For general purposes, the Program on Health Outcomes (PHO) defines "health outcomes" as the end result of the provision of health services to patients and their families.

Pharmacoeconomics Modeling Laboratory

The division’s Pharmacoeconomics Modeling Laboratory provides specialized software and hardware for the purpose of conducting computer simulations of cost-benefit and cost-effective research as well as analyses of health resource utilization. Publicly available drug and medical care use databases are available for study.

Interdisciplinary Certificate in Aging

This certificate program is available through the Institute on Aging. The certificate in aging is a campus-wide program drawing on the University’s rich set of resources to offer graduate students and community professionals gerontological knowledge essential for work in an aging society. The curriculum includes both knowledge base and skills development, allowing participants to prepare for either clinical or scholarly work or both. Students will be encouraged to have contact with older persons and/or with organizations that address the needs of older persons, and/or to be involved in activities addressing policy issues that affect an aging society. Courses in the certificate program relate to health, mental health, policy and practice, and explore the heterogeneity of today’s aging Americans and the resource they represent for our society.

Interdisciplinary Certificate in Health Disparities

This certificate program is available through The UNC Program on Ethnicity, Culture and Health Outcomes (ECHO).  The program has been developed to train health professionals to address the need of reducing racial/ethnic variation or differences in care as related to the overall health of the nation. The science of disparity reduction addresses the need for basic science to be conducted in many health areas to understand the contributors to disparities and how that information can be translated into specific interventions to counterbalance the effects of these contributors.

Certificate Program in Survey Methodology

This certificate program is available through the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science. The Odum Institute’s Certificate Program in Survey Methodology offers training in general survey methodology including date collection methods, questionnaire design, survey computing, and data analysis.  A key feature of the program is the integration of classroom training with hands-on experience in real world problems. In addition, students are required to take short courses offered through the Odum Institute that further expand the list of topics covered in the program. This certificate is available to all graduate students and working professionals who wish to demonstrate academic training and experience in designing and conducting surveys and analyzing and reporting survey results.
