Sanders Wins AHEC Innovation Grant for Opioid Stewardship Training Program

The North Carolina Area Health Education Centers awarded an Innovation Grant to Kimberly Sanders, Pharm.D., a clinical assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, to develop a training program for acute-care opioid prescribing. The $43,398 grant will allow Sanders and her team of collaborators from across the UNC health sciences programs to create and disseminate an interdisciplinary educational toolkit for health-care providers. Patients receiving opioids for pain control after surbery are particularly vulnerable to dependence due to excessive prescribing of opioids, gaps in follow-up and inadequate disposal of excess supply of pills, Sanders said. Eckel Receives Duke’s Skolaut Leadership Award

Stephen F. Eckel, Pharm.D., M.H.A., received the Milton W. Skolaut Leadership Award from the Duke University Department of Pharmacy on June 29. The award is given annually to a past resident of the Duke University Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program in recognition of outstanding leadership and contributions to the profession of pharmacy. The Duke residency program has graduated 240 residents as of 2018. Eckel is the interim chair of the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and the associate dean for global engagement at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Seven 2018 Residents Begin PGY1 Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency

The PGY1 Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy welcomed its third class of residents for 2018–19. The program trains Doctor of Pharmacy graduates to be owners of independent community pharmacies. The residents receive a practical business education to complement their pharmacy education. Seven pharmacy residents will participate in the program, up from four a year ago. Asheville Professors Present at NRHA Annual Conference

Faculty at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville satellite campus presented at the National Rural Health Association annual conference in New Orleans. Over 120 Pharmacy Residents Present Research at REPS Symposium

Pharmacy residents and professionals from across the Southeast gathered at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy for the fifth annual Research in Education and Practice Symposium on May 21 and 22. REPS 2018 included podium presentations from over 120 residents, fellows and postgraduate trainees, as well as three professional development lectures and numerous networking opportunities. Residents were each allotted 12 minutes for their podium presentations and three minutes for questions, and they received feedback from evaluators after presenting their research. Pharmacy Administration Master’s Residents Receive ASHP Grants

Pharmacy residents from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received two of three national grants awarded by the ASHP Foundation. Stephanie Jean, Pharm.D., and Charlotte Wells, Pharm.D., two UNC Medical Center pharmacy administration residents in the School’s master’s degree program, both won the ASHP Foundation Master’s Resident Practice-Based Research Grant for separate research projects. The ASHP grant is awarded to support pharmacy researchers in programs that combine the completion of a residency and a master’s degree. Pamela U. Joyner, M.S.Pharm., Ed.D., is the recipient of the 2018 PAA Distinguished Service Award from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Alumni Association. Joyner is retiring from the School April 1 from her position as executive associate dean for professional education, which she has held since 2010. As executive associate dean, Joyner has been responsible for all professional-education initiatives, including accreditation, the curriculum, experiential education and continuing education. Patients Satisfied with Pharmacists Conducting Wellness Visits

Patients undergoing a Medicare annual wellness visit say they would be satisfied and comfortable with having a clinical pharmacist practitioner working alone conduct the visit rather than having a physician do it, according to a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Having a pharmacist conduct wellness visits frees up physicians to focus on patients’ chronic and acute health conditions.
