Bob Blouin Inducted into UK Pharmacy Alumni Hall of Fame

Robert A. Blouin, PharmD, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, was one of four inducted into the inaugural class of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Hall of Distinguished Alumni March 19­–20. Blouin was among those UK College of Pharmacy graduates recognized for their lifetime professional contributions to pharmacy. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1978 and spent more than twenty-five years there as a faculty member until he was appointed dean at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2003. Jay Receives University of Kentucky Pharmaceutical Sciences Alumni Award

Michael Jay, PhD, has been named the 2014 University of Kentucky Outstanding Graduate Program Alumnus for the Pharmaceutical Sciences. Jay is the Fred Eshelman Distinguished Professor and chair of the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jay, who received his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 1980, received the award as part of the College’s annual graduate program recruitment event January 30. Kabanov Elected to AIMBE College of Fellows

Alexander Kabanov, PhD, DrSci, has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s College of Fellows, an honor reserved for the top two percent of medical and biological engineers. Kabanov was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for seminal works on polymeric nanosystems for drug delivery that have considerably influenced current ideas and approaches in nanomedicine, according to AIMBE. Remembering Feng Liu, PhD, 1955–2014

Feng Liu, PhD, a research professor in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics, died Thursday, July 24, after being assaulted and robbed Wednesday, July 23, while walking in a neighborhood near campus. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 2, at 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall on the UNC campus. Kristy Ainslie and Team Join MOPH

Kristy Ainslie, PhD, joins the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy as an associate professor after almost five years as an assistant professor at Ohio State. Ainslie’s research focuses on immune therapies, including bioterrorism vaccines, autoimmune treatments, and host cell-directed therapeutics. Members of her lab also moved to Chapel Hill, including Research Assistant Professor Eric Bachelder, PhD. Grad Students Kapadia, Claypool Win WVU Research Forum Awards

Two graduate students won awards for their research at WVU’s pharmacy research forum on June 12–13. MOPH’s Chintan Kapadia placed first in the podium presentations, and CBMC’s Sarah Claypool placed third in the poster presentations. Two UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy graduate students received awards at the inaugural West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Regional Research Forum. Two Professors Included in Highly Cited Researchers List

Thomson Reuters’s 2014 Highly Cited Researchers list includes two UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy professors. Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, PhD, and Elena Batrakova, PhD, are among the top one percent cited in their subject field. Kabanov and Batrakova are members of the School’s Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery. Blouin to Chair AACP Dean’s Council

Robert A. “Bob” Blouin, PharmD, is the chair-elect of the Council of Deans of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Blouin has been the dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy since coming to UNC in July of 2003. He is the Vaughn and Nancy Bryson Distinguished Professor in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics. Mumper Wins a 2014 Molecules Best Paper Award

Russ Mumper, PhD, is the recipient of a 2014 Molecules Best Paper Award for a 2010 review of plant phenolic compounds, their processing, and health and medical applications. Mumper is vice dean of the School and the John A. McNeill Distinguished Professor in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics. Mumper and Jin Dai, PhD, received second prize in the review category for “Plant Phenolics: Extraction, Analysis and Their Antioxidant and Anticancer Properties.” Dai was a graduate student in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Kentucky at the time the paper was published. Mumper Receives Alumni Award from University of Kentucky

Russell Mumper, PhD, vice dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been named as the 2013 recipient of the 2013 University of Kentucky Outstanding Graduate Program Alumnus for the Pharmaceutical Sciences award. The award recognizes graduates of the UK graduate program for their accomplishments and contributions to scholarship, education, and research in the pharmaceutical sciences.
