Kim BrouwerKim Brouwer, PhD, the George H. Cocolas Distinguished Professor at the UNC School of Pharmacy, has received the Paul F. Parker Award from the University of Kentucky and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

The annual honor recognizes a former resident of the UK Pharmacy Residency Program or someone intimately associated with the success of the program for the individual’s contribution to the profession via teaching or research. Recipients must show commitment to high ideals and excellence in their chosen field and encourage the personal and professional growth of others.

Brouwer, who chairs the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, received her doctor of pharmacy degree and completed her pharmacy residency at UK in 1981. She also earned her PhD in pharmaceutical sciences there in 1983. After completing her postdoctoral training in drug metabolism at the UK College of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology, she became a part of the faculty at UNC in 1986.

Brouwer has published more than 125 refereed journal articles, 165 abstracts, and six book chapters. She is the principle investigator of a National Institutes of Health R01 grant, titled “Altered Hepatic Disposition of Anionic Drugs: Mechanisms”. She co-invented B-CLEAR, a patented in vitro method to assess hepatic uptake, excretion, and biliary clearance that correlates with in vivo data. She also is a cofounder of Qualyst, Inc., a company that has received exclusive license to the B-CLEAR technology from UNC-Chapel Hill.
