The vice dean serves as the chief operating officer of the School, managing academic and administrative functions and assisting the dean as requested. The vice dean has the following responsibilities:

  • Substitute for the dean, as required
  • Support the dean operationally within the School and the University
  • Facilitate all MOUs and MOAs between ESOP and other University units
  • Chair the Executive Committee meetings
  • Chair the Full Professors Committee
  • Function as the Equal Employment Opportunity Officer for the ESOP
  • Function as the curator of key ESOP documents including the Strategic Plan, Faculty Code (Governance Document), and Policies and the Procedures Governing Appointments, Reappointments, Promotion, and Tenure for Faculty in the ESOP
  • Oversee and Approve External Professional Activities for Pay for Faculty in the ESOP
  • Function as the Initial leader for New Initiatives including InfoPorteTM
  • Serve as the liaison with the University regarding implementation of University-wide program activities
  • Manage areas that cut across professional education and graduate education, such as instructional technology, distance education, and programmatic expansion
  • Provide assistance to the division chairs with recruitment processes
  • Oversee all external communications by the ESOP
  • Oversee the Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure process in the ESOP
  • Provide oversight of the following Offices/Initiatives/Programs:

              • Ensures the proper credentialing of pharmacists practicing in all UNC Health Care System-affiliated practice environments regardless of employer in order to promote congruence and consistency of School /UNC Hospitals Department of Pharmacy mission

                                            Duties of the associate dean for research include the following:
                                              • Serve as the chief research officer in the School and provide vision and leadership for the Research and Graduate Programs, and oversee associated budgets for each program.
                                              • Take the lead in ensuring that all objectives in the Strategic Initiative III  “Research” in the School’s 2011-2016 Strategic Plan are met. Provide an on-going assessment of the completion of objectives and propose revisions or changes in objectives and/or strategic directions as warranted.
                                              • Establish a research advisory board that provides advice and opportunities to the associate dean and Executive Committee.
                                              • Develop and foster strategic research partnerships with key UNC constituents including the vice chancellor for research, School of Medicine, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Carolina Center for Genome Sciences, Institute for Nanomedicine, Gillings School of Global Public Health, and the College of Arts and Sciences, among others.
                                              • Develop and/or identify funding mechanisms and manage funds to support the research and graduate programs including, i) new research initiatives, pilot projects, or seed funding for major proposal opportunities in need of preliminary data, ii) bridge funding, and iii) major capital equipment purchases or equipment maintenance
                                              • Coordinate School-wide proposals for major capital equipment purchases through the University Cancer Research Fund, the Clinical and Translational Science Awards via NC TraCS, as well as other major funding opportunities as they occur.
                                              • Identify major funding opportunities at the NIH and NSF or other large foundations or federal agencies and make faculty aware of these opportunities via frequent communications.
                                              • Work collaboratively with the associate dean for economic development and international partnerships to identify and develop major funding and partnership opportunities with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
                                              • Liaise regularly with NIH and NSF decision makers in order to make them aware of research initiatives in the School that can contribute to the agencies’ mission and to identify/facilitate early and timely program development opportunities.
                                              • Identify and develop opportunities for Public-Private Partnerships
                                              • Provide oversight of all major center/institutes in the School including the following:  Center for Integrative Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery, Center for Nanotechnology and Drug Delivery, Institute for Pharmacogenomics and Individualized Therapy, and the GLP Analytical Facility.
                                              • Work collaboratively with chairs and center and institute directors to advance the research and graduate programs in the School, especially relating to cross-division and cross-center/institute research projects.
                                              • Provide oversight of the Assistant Dean and Director of Graduate Studies.  The Assistant Dean will have day-to-day responsibilities for the Graduate Program including budget, recruitment, admissions, progression, and graduation.   The Assistant Dean will also directly manage the Director of Graduate Student Services in the Office of Student Services.
                                              • Along with the associate dean for economic development and international partnerships, comanage conflict of interests and conflict of commitments relating to faculty, students and trainees, and staff engaged in research in the School.
                                              • Work effectively with the director of business operations and research administration to plan for major grant and contract submissions.
                                              • Work effectively with the vice dean, associate dean for facilities planning, and executive associate dean for business in matters relating to facilities, space utilization, faculty recruitment, and research and graduate program specific budgets.
                                              • Keep the dean and all members of the Executive Committee informed of any matters that significantly impact the research and graduate programs in the School.

                                                Duties of the regional assistant dean at Elizabeth City include the following:

                                                  • Serve as the primary School contact and the chief administrator for the UNC/ECSU Doctor of Pharmacy Partnership Program
                                                  • Serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
                                                  • Provide overall leadership to maintain and expand the ECSU program consistent with the current memorandum of understanding dated January 2005
                                                  • Develop and implement programs and activities that foster growth and support the needs of the students based on the ECSU campus
                                                  • Assist with academic advising, career counseling, management of student organizations, planning student activities/programs, and other student services as needed
                                                  • Collaborate with the director of recruitment, development, and diversity initiatives at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill on recruitment efforts related to the ECSU campus
                                                  • Effectively collaborate with the assistant dean for professional education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill to address student services issues related to students on the ECSU campus
                                                  • Work effectively with key partners including faculty and administration at ECSU
                                                  • Advise and keep the dean and the Executive Committee of the School informed of all important activities pertaining to the ECSU program
                                                  • Work effectively with the vice dean, executive associate dean for business, and the executive associate dean for professional education on all academic, business, and operational matters associated with the ECSU campus
                                                  • With input from the dean, form a new ECSU advisory committee that meets regularly to discuss all aspects of the ECSU Program
                                                  • Work effectively with the associate dean for advancement to identify and secure additional gifts and endowment funds to fully support the ECSU program

                                                    Executive Associate Dean for Business

                                                    The duties of the executive associate dean for business include:

                                                      • Advise the dean on matters with strategic financial implications and coordinate strategic planning and evaluation of growth opportunities.  Ensure that efficient and accurate financial forecasting, planning, and support systems are in place.
                                                      • Prepare operating budgets, regular analysis of expenditures (monthly and quarterly), and construct appropriate financial reports including financial trends.
                                                      • Conduct operational reviews to ensure the School is meeting goals and future objectives.  Ensure that information technology investments are aligned with strategic objectives.
                                                      • Provide leadership and direct supervision of the School's Business Office (finance, HR, IT and facilities). Provide leadership and guidance in fiscal and financial matters to the School's division and unit leaders and administrative managers. Exercise initiative in identifying units that may be encountering financial adversity, serving as an internal consultant to such units in devising remedial action plans to overcome fiscal difficulties.
                                                      • Serve as primary contact with UNC-Chapel Hill campus financial offices operating under the purview of the vice chancellor for administration and finance and the Office of the Provost.  Adhere to and promote School, University, and state policies and regulations.
