Network drive space (K, L and M) on the SOP network is a resource provided for the purpose of storing work-related documents and files, with back up functionality. Network storage space offers users a number of benefits over storing files on their local computer (C Drive). Besides providing enhanced collaboration through data sharing and the ability to access files from any computer on the network, the system allows for automated daily backup of files to tape. This allows the user to request retrieval of prior versions of files (for 90 days) which may be needed due to corruption, viruses or accidental deletion. These network drives can also be accessed, by use of the UNC-CH Cisco VPN Client, remotely from any network connection in the world. All SOP network drive users have a responsibility for managing this space, which includes deleting non-essential or obsolete files to keep space utilization at a minimum.
There are three network drives currently in place for SOP users.
K drive - is accessible by most SOP user communities, including students, this drive is very public and not restricted. The K drive should be used as a temporary storage space. Files on the K drive that are over two weeks old are subject deletion without prior notice.
L Drive - is personal network drive space. Disk space on this drive can be used for storing personal work related documents. By default each network user in the SOP is assigned space on this drive, this space is restricted to only the user assigned to it.
M Drive – is departmental space. This drive can be used for departmental and interdepartmental collaboration. This drive is restricted to faculty/staff of the SOP and those users that have been given permission to view folders by faculty/staff of the SOP. Departmental space is restricted to members of the particular department. Folders and subfolders within departmental space can be further restricted to certain users, interdepartmental collaborative space is also available.
ITSOP’s responsibility for managing network drive space includes setting quotas for individuals and departments. Individuals and departments may request a quota increase, folder creation, restrictions and collaborative space by contacting itsop@unc.edu Before submitting a request for additional network space please ensure that non-essential or obsolete files have been deleted.
DATA THAT CONTAINS PERSONAL INFORMATION (HIPAA, PHI ETC.) SHOULD NEVER BE SAVED TO A NETWORK DRIVE. Personal files, including music and picture files, should are also prohibited on any SOP network drive.
