Go to http://www.unc.edu/wireless/ for information on the wireless networking initiative at UNC. From this site you can link to a current list of wireless access points and learn how to prepare your laptop for wireless networking.
There are currently five wireless access points in Beard and Kerr Halls.
The range of the access points goes beyond the confines of the rooms listed above. Wireless access may be available in adjacent areas.

The PROTECT program is a utility in place on the UNC Campus Web Server that allows folks to control access to personal, departmental and organizational web space.
Here is how you can use PROTECT:
From there, it will give you step-by-step instructions on how to password protect your directory. Please note that PROTECT can be used to restrict access to specific subdirectories as well.
For more information about this program, please refer to the ATN documentation at http://help.unc.edu/?id=651.
THE MYSTERY OF EMAIL CLIENTS EXPLAINED
There are literally hundreds of email "clients". An email client allows you to access your email, it is NOT where your email resides. Imagine that your emails were piles of letters inside of a room, and you have the choice to look through a circular, square or triangular window to see into the room. It wouldn''t matter which window you looked through you would see the same piles of emails. Email clients are like the windows, although they look different you can use any client and you
see the same emails. Some clients that are familiar to us here at the SOP are Netscape Messenger, Siren, Webmail, Pine, and Mulberry. It would be nearly impossible here at the SOP to support all the clients available, so we have to limit which ones we will support. Here at the SOP we support the same clients as the University (see below), with the exception of Microsoft Outlook. We feel strongly that not supporting
Outlook has saved us from being infected by some of the major viruses, the I love you, Melissa and Code Red Worm viruses to name a few. Follow the links below for some information on email and email clients.

It is nearly impossible without one of us sitting at your computer when the lock up happens to determine what may be causing that problem. Lock ups and freezes will happen from time to time, it would be very helpful for anyone who is experiencing these on a consistent basis, to write down what you were doing at the time of the freeze up and what error messages appear.
We do not control email here at the SOP, however, the campus provides a page that gives you the "status" of the email SERVER. Many problems with email can be traced back to the email server. To check the status of the email server go to http://help.unc.edu (no www) and scroll down until you see "Service Status. " Look for the status of the "Electronic Mail System."
For more info and email storage space go to https://onyen.unc.edu and click "check disk space usage."
Here at UNC we all have ONYENS, yes you do have an ONYEN. As we advance technologically, our passwords and ONYENS will increasingly be linked to special programs and web based materials. Therefore, it is important that you change your password often. UNC requires you to change your ONYEN password every 90 days. Follow the links below to learn more about your ONYEN and the way you can use it here on campus (hint: ONYEN=username for email).
-What the heck is an ONYEN? Go to https://onyen.unc.edu and click on "About the ONYEN" in the upper right hand corner.
-ONYEN maintenance including changing password and setting
vacation message. Go to https://onyen.unc.edu.
