Academic Technology and Networks provides free e-mail to UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, staff, and students. These services are available on ISIS, a dedicated e-mail server, which also provides access to the Internet.
ONYEN
Before you can get an e-mail account, you must first have a UNC PID (personal identification number). Once you have a UNC PID, you may obtain your UNC e-mail account by creating an ONYEN (an acronym for Only Name You’ll Ever Need). The ONYEN is your user ID that will give you access to various electronic resources on campus. You can create your ONYEN by going to onyen.unc.edu and clicking on the "Create an ONYEN" button at the top of the screen. You will be asked to choose a password when you create your ONYEN. A UNC e-mail account will be automatically generated for you.
After you have an ONYEN, you may go to http://webmail.unc.edu to check your e-mail from any computer in the world with Internet access.
Changing your Email Password
UNC requires that you change your ONYEN password every ninety days. If you lose your ONYEN password or forget to change it before the deadline, you will have to get a new one by taking your UNC One Card (or another picture ID) to one of the password reset sites listed on the ONYEN services page (click on the "Change Password" button for the hours and locations of the password reset sites).
