Message from the Dean

Dean Bob Blouin Let me welcome you to the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy Web site. Through this portal we hope you will encounter useful information about our program, and particularly about the people who make Carolina a community of colleagues dedicated to excellence.

The School of Pharmacy is a diverse program. Our faculty and students are actively involved in research projects ranging from the discovery of new drugs, to assessments of the efficacy of existing drugs and treatment regimens. Our teaching activities and areas of expertise are equally diverse, including educating “students” who are health-care professionals (pharmacists, physicians, nurses) as well as more traditional students enrolled in graduate and professional degree programs.

While this diversity of ideas, approaches, and people is one of our School’s great strengths, one bond unites us: a belief that we are in the midst of an exciting pharmacologic revolution that will continue to expand the role of drug therapy as the most cost-effective form of health care in the 21st century. The evidence is everywhere, as new drugs are discovered to treat previously untreatable conditions, and as existing drugs are substituted for hospitalization, surgical care, and emergency services in our health-care system. On the horizon are breakthroughs in genomics, informatics, and pharmacology that will only increase the importance of drug therapy in patient care.

Whether you are interested in a career as a practicing pharmacist or a pharmaceutical scientist; whether you are exploring opportunities for collaboration with our faculty; or whether you are learning about the exciting world of pharmaceutical care from the perspective of a patient, we welcome your interest in Carolina. Please tour our Web site and contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to your comments and questions.

Sincerely,

Robert Blouin
