Embedding a Powerpoint Slideshow

Do you have a Powerpoint slideshow that you wish to make available to others on your lab site? You can always upload it as a file, which would require someone to download it before they can open it. If, however, you wish to allow people to view the slideshow directly on the Web site, you can use slideshare.com to embed it on a page on your lab site (see an example). Here's how.

  1. Go to slideshare.com. Sign up for an account. It’s free and quick.
  2. After logging in, click on the “Upload” button.

  3. Click the “Browse and Select File” button. Pick your file. The upload page has a list of file formats that are supported.
  4. After the file is uploaded, you’ll be presented with a screen to fill in information about the file (title, description, etc.). You can also enter tags and choose a category for the slideshow so that others can search for it on slideshare.com. You can also set the privacy setting (note, to embed this, you must pick “everyone” for the privacy setting). Hit the “Publish” button after you’ve filled in the fields.
  5. Your slideshow will be published in a few minutes, at which point you’ll see it if you click on the My Slidespace button at the top. Click on the thumbnail of the file and you’ll go to that slideshow.
  6. To the right of the slideshow, you’ll see an “embed” field. This is the code you will copy and paste into your Web page to embed the slideshow. By default, the embedded slideshow will show “related slideshows” after it’s done playing. If you don’t wish to have that, click the “custom” link under the embed field and you’ll get the appropriate embed code.

  7. Copy the embed code, then go to the page on the School of Pharmacy site where you wish to embed the slideshow. Log in and go into edit mode on the page by clicking the "edit" button at the top. On the editing screen, under the "Body Text" field, click the “Source” button in the toolbar. This changes the view to the code for the page.

  8. In the code, scroll to the place where you want to insert the slideshow, and paste in the embed code. Then hit the “save” button at the bottom of the page. Your slideshow should now appear on the page:

Note: If you go back into editing mode, you will notice that the editing window is only showing the slideshow’s title and footer captions, not the slideshow itself. Don’t worry, it’s still there. Just edit around it.
